Sony Corporation and its subsidiaries engage in the development, design, manufacture, and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, and devices for consumer and industrial markets worldwide. It operates in five segments: Electronics, Game, Pictures, Financial Services, and Other. Electronics segment designs, develops, manufactures, and sells various electronic equipments. This segment’s products include audio and video products, video cameras, digital cameras, liquid crystal displays, personal computers, information and communication products, semiconductors, and other related products. Game segment develops and distributes PlayStation, PS one, PlayStation2, and PlayStation Portable hardware and related software; and licenses to third party software developers. Pictures segment engages in the production, acquisition, and distribution of motion pictures, television programming, and home entertainment; television broadcasting; digital content creation and distribution; and operation of studio facilities. Financial Services segment engages in life and non-life insurance, Internet-based banking, and leasing and credit financing businesses. This segment also offers various financial services, including savings and loans. Other segment involves in production of recorded music and music videos through contracts with artists; music publishing; advertising agency; and an in-house facilities management business. In addition, the company provides repair and servicing functions through its service centers, factories, authorized independent service centers, authorized servicing dealers, and its subsidiaries. The company was founded in 1946 as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha and changed its name to Sony Corporation in 1958. Sony is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. Full History >>
